Problem-Soving Maths

Mrs Pettersson's maths group is trying a new way of doing maths. We work with a buddy to try and solve a problem. It is important that we can come back to the mat and explain how we solved it.

ACTIVE Play during reading time

We are always super busy during reading time.
We like reading to a buddy. Today the Oranges and the Strawberries reading groups shared their books with each other.
We love reading time because we can use other people to help us.  Sydney
We sat next to our buddy and helped each other.
Somedays we get to go on the iPads.
When we are not reading we are able to be creative. It's nice being able to work with a buddy.
It is important we talk nicely to each other and listen to ideas.
We always have lots of fun.
We got to have some fun building at the woodwork table.
We can draw together and share our ideas.
We would love you to come and visit!

Miss Norman read us a book called 'Ish'

We talked about how our work doesn't have to be perfect we just have to try our best and we can be really proud of ourselves. We drew a scribble on our whiteboards and then swapped with a buddy. We had to turn it into an ish picture.

T12 and T10 making our own Worm Farms

On Friday we travelled to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

We met Chris from the city council at The Curators House. He took us to a secret spot to make our worm farms.

First, we had to make our bottles nice and dark. We used newspaper.

It was great having lots of adults to help us.

Next, we had to make a bed for the worms.
We ripped up newspaper to make it.
It was fun tearing lots of strips.
Then, Chris got us to soak them in some warm water with a little bit of soil mixed in.
It was fun getting our hands wet.
We found a great spot to have some morning tea.
Then, we got to do the best part, FIND OUR WORMS!
Tiger was very excited to find his own tiger worm!
We were all brave and got our hands in the soil.

It was a fantastic morning. Thank you to all the parents who came and lent a hand.

We are learning about Rubbish and Recycling

This week T12 spent their writing time looking at the different coloured wheelie bins we have at home.

We learnt that:

  • the yellow one is for recycling
  • the green one is for food and gardening things
  • the red bin is for everything else (rubbish)
We worked with a buddy to sort some things Mrs Pettersson brought in.
It was important to work together.
We shared our ideas and took turns drawing.

Play Based Learning: Open Door Friday

We are loving being able to play at the start of each day.

We love being creative and coming up with new ideas.

We are learning to work with a buddy.

We love getting to move our body in different ways.

We can explore what things float and sink.

We can practice slam dunking so we can be like Steven Adams.

We can solve problems as a team.

We can find a quiet spot to play a game together.

Here is a great clip from YouTube that explains some of the things we learn as we play.
